TOKYO (Reuters) - There is a clear plan to launch a new model of the MR2, after it was halted in 2007, an official source and a senior management of the Japanese automaker Toyota said.
A number of major automotive news sites have published comments by Toyota's iconic engineer, Tetsiwa Tada, that the German supercar maker Porsche is on the list of candidates for cooperation with Toyota to work on reviving the MR2 in its new costume.
The MR2 was reportedly part of a major plan within the company's walls, but the type and performance of the engine to be introduced in the new version has been a major reason for postponing reproduction since 2007.
Toyota's chief engineer, Tetsiwa Tada, did not disclose the official start date for the production of a new version of the MR2.
However, the Japanese company is keen to implement its plan to save money to invest in the development of more sports models, as happened with the new Supra and 86 models.
It is worth mentioning that Toyota has previously cooperated with several major car companies in the development and production of the most prominent models, most notably the 2020 version of the model "Supra" engine of the German company BMW, and with the Japanese company "Subaru" to develop the new version of the model 86.
