Incorporation
The company was founded from the remnants of Henry Ford when Henry Ford left the company with several of his main partners to liquidate the company's assets. This convinced Leyland to continue working with the Leyland cylinder engine installed. When Henry Ford left the company a new name was required, and (August 22, 1902) the company was renamed the Cadillac Automobile Company.
The Cadillac was named after the 17th century explorer Antoine Lumit de la Motte sur de Cadillac, who founded Detroit in 1701.
